UKOTA Youth Summit – 27 February 2025
Youth delegates from across the Overseas Territories gathered at BVI House, the British Virgin Islands’ Government Office in London, for the second UKOTA Youth Summit (OTYS) to discuss a range of policy areas. This year’s summit is the first to be held since the inaugural event in November 2023.
The delegates were welcomed by Tracy Bradshaw, BVI’s Representative to the United Kingdom and current Chair of UKOTA, who highlighted UKOTA’s work and the importance of ensuring young people’s voices are heard in political debates. Officials from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office’s Overseas Territories and Polar Directorate also delivered speeches throughout the day, reflecting on their experiences working with the Overseas Territories. Taj Donville-Outerbridge, a Bermudian human rights activist based in the UK, delivered a keynote speech on LGBTQ+ rights.
The day-long summit was chaired by BVI’s Malia Choucoutou, with delegates debating three key policy areas: neurodiversity, disability and impairment in education, LGBTQ+ rights and representation, and immigration and migration. At the conclusion of the summit, the delegates adopted a joint communiqué to be presented to their respective governments for consideration.
The purpose of the OTYS is to encourage youth participation in debates and discussions on issues affecting the Overseas Territories. It provides an opportunity for cross-collaboration and relationship-building between the territories, empowering young people to engage in discussions and propose innovative ideas.
